Replacing an old boiler: stay hydronic, go ductless, or both
The question isn't just which boiler to buy. If your radiators are original to the house, the real decision is whether to replace like-for-like, add ductless heat pumps room by room, or run both together.
Why this decision is different from a straight boiler replacement
Most people replacing a failing boiler default to replacing it with another boiler, because that's what's already there and it's the least disruptive path in the moment. That's a reasonable default — but if your existing system is old enough to be failing outright, it's also the moment when a genuinely different option is on the table: converting some or all of the house to ductless mini-split heat pumps instead, which also gives you air conditioning a radiator-only house has never had.
This isn't a boiler-vs-mini-split popularity contest. They solve different problems, and for a lot of houses the right answer involves both.
The case for staying hydronic
If your radiators or radiant floor are in good condition and sized for the house, replacing just the boiler is the least disruptive, least expensive path, and it keeps a heating system your existing near-boiler piping, zoning, and (if you have one) domestic-hot-water setup are already built around. Hydronic heat also doesn't blow air, which some households simply prefer, and radiators already distributed through the house solve a whole-house heating problem that a first phase of mini-splits — typically one or two zones — does not.
The honest downside: a boiler-only system still doesn't cool the house, and a straight boiler swap doesn't touch that.
The case for ductless heat pumps
Mini-splits solve two problems a boiler-only house has at once: they heat with a heat pump's efficiency instead of burning fuel, and they add cooling to a house that's never had it, in one appliance. For a room-by-room retrofit — say, a finished attic or an addition the hydronic system was never extended to — this is usually the simpler and less invasive path, since it doesn't require running new hydronic piping. The honest downside: in a genuinely cold climate, an all-electric conversion needs cold-climate-rated equipment and, in many cases, a backup heat source for the coldest nights — exactly the design problem a dual-fuel setup below is built to solve. The middle path: keep the boiler, add mini-splits where they earn their keep
A pattern worth considering explicitly rather than defaulting past: keep the existing boiler and radiators as the whole-house heating backbone (and, if it's a combi or has an indirect tank, your domestic hot water), and add mini-splits to the specific rooms where they solve a real problem — an addition the radiators never reached, a home office that runs hot in summer, a bonus room over a garage. This gets you cooling where you actually want it and heat pump efficiency in the rooms with the highest use, without betting the whole house's heat on a single conversion project or losing the existing system's reliability as backup.

What actually determines the right answer for your house
Condition of the existing radiators/piping. If they're sound and adequately sized, that's a real asset a straight boiler swap keeps using; if they're failing or undersized for a renovated house, the case for hydronic weakens.
How cold it actually gets — the 99% winter design temperature, not the record low. A cold-climate mini-split's capacity-at-5°F number (see the mini-split guide) tells you how much of the coldest nights it can actually carry versus lean on backup.
Whether you want air conditioning at all. If you don't, a chunk of the case for converting to ductless disappears, and a straight boiler replacement gets simpler to justify.
What each fuel actually costs where you live. before deciding. The right answer depends on your specific house, not a general rule.
