Looking for 2026 incentives or equipment that fits your climate?

The people who sell you the system shouldn't be the ones choosing it.

Most contractors install a short list of brands. That can make for a good installation, but it doesn't make for a complete comparison. We research the equipment independently, show where every material number came from, and separate the manufacturer's claims from what owners and technicians report later.

Efficiency, capacity, operating limits, warranty, and price — linked to the original record.

We tell you what the better feature costs, and when the expensive option is the wrong one.

Real-world reports, kept separate

Start with what you're replacing. Each guide explains the decision; each product page shows the evidence.

Heating & cooling

Equipment for keeping the house comfortable — and the trade-offs among ducts, fuel, efficiency, and cold-weather performance.

Water

The equipment that heats household water or brings it in from a private well.

Home energy

Equipment that makes, stores, and shifts electricity at home.

What a The Home Engine answer looks like

A heat pump can look excellent on paper and still be wrong for your house.

The useful questions aren't only its headline efficiency. How much heat does it still produce at your winter design temperature? Does the listed outdoor unit actually match the indoor equipment? Can a qualified local company service it? We put those answers together, show the sources, and tell you where the evidence is thin.

Our take

Strong fit for a cold-climate house that already has usable ducts

  • Keeps 100% of its rated heating capacity at 5°F — most heat pumps quietly lose about a third of theirs exactly when you need it most
  • Priced at the top of the range among heat pumps with a sourced installed cost: $12,900–$18,100
  • You're locked into Carrier's dealer network for service once it's installed

Both federal residential energy tax credits (25C and 25D) expired 31 December 2025. Published advice that still assumes a 30% credit is out of date — for a solar array that's roughly a 43% jump in what you actually pay.

What owners actually report. The research people currently do across Reddit, YouTube, Amazon and trade forums over several evenings — spec sheets checked against reality, trade opinion kept separate from marketing, and what actually fixed it — collected and linked back to the original.

Why trust any of this

Because you can check it. Every number on this site is stored with the document it came from, the date it was read, and a confidence score. Where two sources disagree, we record the disagreement and show which one we published. Where the disagreement is large, we withhold the product rather than guess — 4 products are currently withheld for exactly that reason.

We rank sources by authority, not by convenience. A certification body outranks a manufacturer's marketing sheet, which outranks a review site. When a higher-authority source becomes available, it automatically replaces what we had.
