Air-source heat pumps
Daikin Fit Aurora DH9VS
Installed price varies more between contractors than between brands. Get three quotes.
Side-discharge variable-speed heat pump with a small footprint, rated for cold-climate operation to -13°F.
Our take
The Fit's real advantage is physical: a side-discharge cabinet that fits where a conventional condenser won't, which matters on tight urban lots and townhouse side yards more than any efficiency number. Cold-weather performance is solid rather than exceptional.
Best for
Space-constrained installations in moderate to cold climates.
Watch out for
Side discharge means the airflow goes somewhere — check it isn't aimed at a patio or a neighbour's window.
How it performs by climate zone
Heating capability against each zone's 99% winter design temperature.
| Zone | Design temp | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| 3C — Warm – Marine | 36°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 36°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 4A — Mixed – Humid | 14°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 14°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 4B — Mixed – Dry | 18°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 18°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 4C — Mixed – Marine | 27°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 27°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 5A — Cool – Humid | 2°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 2°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 5B — Cool – Dry | 3°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a 3°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 6A — Cold – Humid | -8°F | Workable Rated to -13°F against a -8°F design temperature — enough margin, though backup heat will run on the coldest days. |
| 6B — Cold – Dry | -10°F | Marginal Rated to -13°F with a -10°F design temperature leaves almost no margin. Expect backup heat to carry a meaningful share of the load. |
| 7 — Very Cold | -20°F | Not suitable Rated only to -13°F, but this zone's design temperature is -20°F. |
| 8 — Subarctic | -40°F | Not suitable Rated only to -13°F, but this zone's design temperature is -40°F. |
Where the spec sheet and owners disagree
Capacity Ratio 5f — datasheet 75 vs reported 100%
The datasheet gives Capacity retained at 5°F as 75%. An owner reports measuring 100% in real installations — roughly 33% higher. We publish both figures and let you judge; the specification is not wrong so much as measured under conditions your installation will not reproduce.
What owners and installers report

Recalls and safety notices
Official recalls and safety actions from regulators. Rare, but decisive — a recall outranks every specification on the page.
Thin evidence — too few independent reports to call this a pattern. Shown because it may still be worth asking your contractor about.
The U.S. CPSC issued a 2024 recall of Daikin FIT, Amana S-series and Goodman SD heat pumps for a risk of excessive heat exposure (overheating). Confirm your unit's model and serial against the recall notice and check that any remedy was performed.

Cold-weather performance
Whether the unit actually keeps the house warm when it gets cold, and how hard backup heat has to work. On a heat pump water heater this is whether it stays in efficient heat-pump mode or falls back to resistance heat in a cold space.

An owner reported their Daikin Fit shut down around -18°C despite literature advertising operation well below that — a gap between the rated low-temperature figure and cold-weather reality.
“Advertised literature said it would operate to -29C… it shuts down at -18C.” — owner homeowner, 2021

Independent field review data-logged the Aurora DH9VS's heating output across a real outdoor-temperature sweep rather than citing the spec sheet: output actually climbs as it nears freezing (2-ton nominal measured at ~3.5 tons/41,800 BTU at 35°F), holds full nominal capacity at 5°F, still delivers just under 1.5 tons at -10°F, and switches to auxiliary heat below -13°F. Corroborates the catalog's capacity_ratio_5f figure with an independent field measurement rather than contradicting it. Installed at a 4,500 ft ski-resort site with custom wind baffles — a harder site than a typical suburban install.
“At 5°F, the system continue to deliver its full nominal heating capacity.” — Steve Nagy, 2025-12-24

Controls and compatibility
Thermostat integration, communicating-system lock-in, firmware, and whether the equipment achieves its rated staging in practice. On tankless water heaters this also covers ignition delay and the 'cold water sandwich' effect.

A satisfied owner praised the variable-speed comfort but criticised the proprietary thermostat's clunky menu structure.
“Structure of the menus on Daikin's proprietary thermostat are clunky, but that's just a software issue.” — owner homeowner, 2021

Defrost behaviour
How often the unit defrosts, how loud it is, and whether the house gets cold during the cycle. Rarely appears in any specification.
Thin evidence — too few independent reports to call this a pattern. Shown because it may still be worth asking your contractor about.
A named owner (exact install: DH9VSA2410 condenser, MBVK16CH1X00 air handler, 15kW heat strips; installed Minnesota, Dec 2025) reports the unit shipped without the optional pan heater due to a stock shortage at install time, and the installer set a conservative -5°F compressor lockout as a result, planning to lower it once the pan heater is fitted. A supply-chain/installer-choice caveat rather than a unit defect, but a concrete example of how defrost-reliability accessories can be missing at install and silently narrow a unit's real cold-weather range.
“installed without the Pan Heater... they get them in-stock. So the defrosts are not as reliable. So to play it safe, we set the lockout to -5” — dereks4720, 2026-04-23

An installer highlighted the Daikin Fit's very quiet outdoor unit and small footprint; an owner agreed both were priorities it delivered on.
“Super quiet outdoor unit and a small footprint. Both were high priorities for us.” — installer homeowner, 2021

Before you buy this
Ask the contractor for the AHRI certificate number for the specific indoor/outdoor combination being installed — ratings apply to matched pairs, not to the outdoor unit alone. Ask whether they will perform a Manual J load calculation rather than sizing off the equipment being replaced. And check your state and utility incentive programmes: there is no federal tax credit for a 2026 installation, so those programmes are now the only incentive money available, and many require approval before installation.
