Central air conditioners
Lennox Merit ML14KC1-018 Air Conditioner
Prices are the outdoor condenser only, before an indoor coil or install labour. This differs from the heat-pump category's equipment_system default because the real market for central-ac specifically skews toward condenser-only replacement — the existing indoor coil or air handler is frequently kept if compatible. Where we only found an equipment-system or installed price, the bridge above is a national planning estimate, so treat those rows as rough. Get contractor quotes for the install itself.
Entry-tier single-stage cooling-only condenser, SEER2 up to 17, sized for a small home or condo.
Our take
This is Lennox's base box — the cheapest way to get compliant with the 2025 A2L refrigerant mandate rather than a performance pick. At 73 dB it's loud for its size; fine on a large lot, worth checking against your setback if neighbors or bedroom windows are close.
Best for
A small or well-insulated home or condo needing a straightforward, inexpensive cooling-only replacement.
Watch out for
73 dB is loud for a 1.5-ton unit relative to the category. Confirm placement before buying on price alone.

Equipment price is not installed price. The listings above are what the hardware costs. Installation — labour, electrical, refrigerant lines, permits, removing the old system — is typically a similar amount again, and varies more between contractors than between brands. Where we have an installed figure it is labelled as such and comes from someone who actually installs.

Collected from trade forums, owner communities and video reviews. Every report links to the original. We synthesise and quote briefly — we don't republish other people's writing.
Sizing and capacity in practice
Whether the unit as installed matches the load, including short-cycling and temperature overshoot from oversizing.
Thin evidence — too few independent reports to call this a pattern. Shown because it may still be worth asking your contractor about.
Category-wide finding, not specific to this product: an undersized system that can't reach setpoint drives the thermostat to be set warmer just to avoid running constantly — this owner ran $500/month summer electric bills at 78-79°F, still not full comfort, the mirror problem to the oversizing cluster above and equally a sizing-calculation failure rather than an equipment defect.
“Despite keeping my thermostat at 78 and sometimes 79 degrees I had $500 electric bills 3 months in a row during the hot summer months.” — stella_2006 (homeowner) homeowner, 2006

Noise in real installations
What owners report hearing, versus the manufacturer's rated sound level. Rated figures are measured under controlled conditions that rarely match a real installation.
Thin evidence — too few independent reports to call this a pattern. Shown because it may still be worth asking your contractor about.
Category-wide finding, not specific to this product: a newly installed Lennox system runs audibly louder indoors than the system it replaced — a livability complaint tied as much to indoor air-handler placement and duct design as to the equipment's own sound rating.

Before you buy this
Ask the contractor for the AHRI certificate number for the specific indoor/outdoor combination being installed — ratings apply to matched pairs, not to the outdoor unit alone. Ask whether they will perform a Manual J load calculation rather than sizing off the equipment being replaced. And check your state and utility incentive programmes: there is no federal tax credit for a 2026 installation, so those programmes are now the only incentive money available, and many require approval before installation.
